Steven Horwitz Prize for Public Scholarship
“Economics must not be relegated to classrooms and statistical offices and must not be left to esoteric circles. It is the philosophy of human life and action and concerns everybody and everything. It is the pith of civilization and of man’s human existence.” (Excerpted from Ludwig von Mises, “Economics and the Citizen,” Human Action, 1949)
Steven Horwitz was a founding member of the SDAE, one of its early presidents, and served for many years as its secretary. Steve was a central figure at the SDAE for the first quarter century of its existence. Over and above his academic work, Steve became known as an excellent popularizer of economic ideas, demonstrating that economics is not just or even primarily for experts: it is a science for citizens, empowering them to practice self-governance in a free society. To honor this legacy, the SDAE announced and presented the inaugural Steven Horwitz Prize for Public Scholarship at its 2022 Annual Dinner and Business Meeting.
